My name is Liz, and I'm just a soap maker, author, scientist, wife, and gal with ideas. My newsletter encompasses all of these things, and you can sign up for it below!
Starting in 2003, my interest in soap making was piqued by one of my undergraduate labs that went over how to make soap. The end result was a white puck of caustic salt floating around in some unknown liquid. While unusable, the process itself had me curious.
Back then, there weren't many resources for finding information on soap making... the internet was around, but not like it is today, and online how-to's were scarce. One site, Miller Soap, existed, and I did learn a great deal from there. If you click the link, you'll see how dated the site is. It says it was updated early this year, but it looks exactly like I remember it from over 2 decades ago. While trying to hone the craft, I've made squishy soaps, caustic soaps, honey tunnels, volcanoes, glycerin rivers, soap on a stick, and just straight burnt garbage. I've fine-tuned my recipe, did a TON of experimentation with additives and fragrances, and I've come up with a standard go-to formula that I like to use. However, it's been tweaked a little because, as of typing this, the cost of olive oil has skyrocketed. I've been sourcing suitable replacements, and I'm happy with high oleic safflower and high oleic sunflower. Basically, all that to say, I'm constantly analyzing the market and readjusting to continue creating fantastic soaps that feel nice and smell great. I'm always open to suggestions and custom requests as well!** Needless to say, I've come a long way from researching books and finding bits and pieces of information to compile into some semblance of functional soap. Now, I've got over 20 years under my belt, and in the near future, I plan on launching a Kickstarter campaign to create a soap design book! If you follow my newsletter, you'll be the first to know when the campaign launches (sign up below)! ** Are you interested in a custom batch of soap? I have a sign up form!
